برغم أن أعداد الوفيات بسبب الإيدز والحالات الجديدة قد تقلصت بشكل ملحوظ بسبب توافر العلاجات المضادة للفيروسات، إلا إنه لا يزال هناك 2 مليون شخص جُدد يصابون بفيروس نقص المناعة كل عام، في ظل عدم وجود علاج له حتى الآن.
